Virtual Application Solutions
Virtual Applications is a technology that is becoming more and more widely used, the concept is that an application is compiled into a single file that is stored on the network, and then made available to workstations via a piece of client software. When launched on a workstation the application works in a ‘sandbox’ environment, it fully functions as normal, and is able to interact with the machine, and other applications (including other virtual ones), and on exiting the application the workstation returns to a state, as if the application never existed.
The main reason/benefit of virtual applications is that the applications are never installed on the workstations, which means they can be deployed very quickly (just compile and share an application via the server), and that they do not affect the performance of the workstations at all.
Microsoft’s own application virtualisation technology (AppV), uses a streaming server, which pushes only the required portion of the application down to the client, to minimise the impact on the network. The client software then cache’s the data, so that it never needs to download it again.
Key benefits of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure are:
- High Performance from workstations over longer period of time
- Speed of application deployment
- Minimise application conflicts, and need for testing
- Central management of applications
